Artificial Intelligence

As reported in media, more than 19,500 dialects are spoken in India. Add to this the number of dialects spoken across the world and we will get a long list of languages in the world.

Yet, a manuscript estimated to be about 600 years old, could not be read or understood till now. Yes this 240-page Voynich manuscript is written using what could be a coded language and inscrutable illustrations.  The manuscript consists of hundreds of fragile pages, some missing, with hand-written text going from left to right. Most pages are adorned with illustrations of diagrams, including plants, nude figures, and astronomical symbols.
Some are of opinion that it was created using semi-random encryption schemes; anagrams; or writing systems in which vowels have been removed. Some have even suggested the document is an elaborate hoax.
Artificial Intelligence has been used in an attempt to understand which language is used to write  this manuscript and can we know more about what this manuscript is all about.

Step1)  AI studied the text of the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” as it was written in 380 different languages, looking for patterns. Following this training, the AI analyzed the Voynich manuscript, concluding with a high rate of certainty that the text was written in encoded Hebrew language.
Step2) A
hypothesis was proposed by previous researchers—that this manuscript was written using alphagrams, that is, words in which text has been replaced by an alphabetically ordered anagram.  Hence, an algorithm that could take these anagrams and create real Hebrew words was developed.
Step3) AI deciphered the opening phrase of the manuscript as several disjointed words in Hebrew language.
When you can't make a sentence of these words and understand the meaning, it is time for more work on AI.
After more iterations and corrections, we get‘She made recommendations to the priest, man of the house and me and people"
What AI did here was
a) Identify the language in which the manuscript was written. Hebrew in this case.

b) Coding scheme were letters are arranged in particular order ( Alphagram)
What next ?
Language experts in ancient Hebrew can work to decipher this entire manuscript.

This is one example of what is known as Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) or weak AI
